Rare 1940 M28 Studebaker Weasel
The vast bulk
of the Weasels are M29 and M29C. This M28 predates those by a year or two.
It differs mostly in the placement of the engine, which is in the rear and
centered side to side. The M29 moved it up to the front right corner and the
tracks on the M29 look backwards, in that they are taller in the rear, where
the drive sprocket is. On the M28 they are taller in front, which looks more
natural. Also, the road wheels (bogies) are slanted, in an attempt to hold
on the track center guides better. The engine is the same Studebaker
Champion. The engine or transmission doesn't turn and will need rebuilt.
This is a 6 volt vehicle not the later 12 volts, like in the M29. It rolls
freely and the steering brakes work fine. Weight is something like 4,000
pounds. It already has cable modifications done to the tracks, which
literally all Weasels need after this long. The hull is not rusted out like
most of them. This one has two small rust holes that are repairable and
would float. it ran 3 years ago. It was stored under tarps so no water went
into the engine. It even has the cute little trailer hitch that is pretty
rare.
Historically, there were 780 of these made and about 10,000 of the later M29
and M29c, so this is a collectable version of the Weasel.
